Years ago my wife and I watched the first season of Hacks and very much enjoyed it. I had forgotten about it. I am glad to be reminded so that we can get back to it.
I did try Hacks but just couldn’t get into it. I found the characters especially Deborah to be incredibly annoying and worse for me sort of existentially unhappy. I can watch shows about people who are unhappy in the face of tragedy. But not those for whom it appears a personality trait. That’s what makes horse races, as my grandmother used to say. What appeals to one person isn’t going to appeal to the next. I think you can tell a lot about a person by the shows they like.
I felt similarly after watching a few episodes, but my wife wanted to keep watching. I found the second season to be much better — the characters lose their initial one-dimensionality needed to establish the premise. The third season is absolutely amazing, imo the best show on TV (along with Ripley). Watching the characters confront that root unhappiness through each other is joyous and moving.
If you are not going to vote for President Biden because you are angry about his handling of the Palestine crisis, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, immigration, the economy, forgiving student debt, etc., and you think the alternative would be better on these issues--congratulations, you have passed the Trump Cognitive Test!
Trump actually would be better than Biden on forgiving student debt since he doesn’t, as far as I know, support that odious form of regressive taxation.
No, he just supports ending the income tax & financing the government by tariffs only. We did that for the first 70 or so years of the country & then discovered it didn't work.
Plus the economists all say it would result in an income drop for the poor & middle class of a few thousand dollars a year.
What that traitorous bastard really wants is to make himself & his billionaire buddies even richer & more powerful to turn us into their slaves!
All true, and among the myriad reasons I would never vote for Trump. The student debt issue, however, is a rare instance in which Trump’s position is not only the saner one, it’s also exhibit “A” for anyone that might be wondering why so much of the blue collar voting base have abandoned the Democrats. I believe it was a discussion on this very issue that prompted Paul Begala to observe that the Democrats have gone from being the party of the factory floor to the party of the faculty lounge.
Thanks for the right wing caricature of people burdened with syudent debt as a bunch of undeserving avocado-toast-eating loafers. The facts are that the Democrats policy was aimed at low-income people owing $10,000 to be forgiven. Many of these people, especially veterans, who were duped by rapacious for-profit "universities" into going in to debt for worthless degrees or in many cases (Trump University, etc.) no degrees at all
Thanks for imagining that I wrote something that I didn’t. Who said anything about their diet, or being loafers? For all I know, most college graduates are simple bologna and cheese connoisseurs who work their asses off, but that isn’t the point. Having advanced degrees assures greater earning potential, breadth of opportunity, and is the surest ticket to upward mobility, so it isn’t like that burdensome debt doesn’t come accompanied with some considerable benefits. Cancelling that debt allows this privileged class to reap those benefits whilst putting the taxpayers (the majority of whom have not gone to college, and will not, on average, enjoy the same income potential and opportunities) on the hook to cover the cost of that privilege. That is a textbook definition of regressive taxation, and it is the last thing that Democrats should be jockeying for.
I’m not sure where you came up with this idea that the aim of student debt relief is merely to come to the rescue of low income people that have been bilked. For as long as I can remember, the demand for “free” college for everyone has been a hobbyhorse of the radical wing of the party, the Bernie Sanders types and such. Since they don’t think that anyone should have to pay for a higher education, they regard the very idea of student debt to be an unconscionable moral outrage, on par with denying a pregnant rape victim access to abortion, or leaving elderly people to die in sweltering heat, or demanding a Gen Z-er refrain from looking at their phone for two minutes.
“Thank you for imagining I wrote something that I didn’t.” Get used to it on this forum if you express any opinion that can remotely be considered conservative. 😉
I've never understood the obsession over the ten commandments on the part of many Christians. After all, in the gospel of Matthew, Jesus summed everything up in just two commandments - love God and love your neighbor.
At least EZ got the one correct, as "Thou shalt not murder", which is the original Hebrew version, which is far more specific & correct than the revised Christian one of "Thou shalt not kill" which makes killing in self defense wrong & the same for national defense in war wrong.
Over the years I have been fascinated by Christian Fundies' obsession with the Old Testament - although I believe that it is used primarily to justify the (once underlying, and now overt) bigotry and misogyny that is at the root of Christian fundamentalism. The New Testament, with its emphasis on loving one's neighbor and forgiveness (and not on Old Testament-style punishment and retribution), is what Christianity is supposed to be all about.
I think the Ten Commandments issue is much less about the commandments themselves than it is about the conservative Christian minority "marking their territory", asserting control and resisting the pluralism and the changing demographics of our country. It's all about "you don't tell us what to do, we tell you what to do" and is in the same spirit as gun control, abortion, trans gender bathroom bans, and all the other "identity" issues.
Similar to Mary Schmich's encounter, I was on a bus in The Loop a couple of months ago & some older teens were wondering about the poles they hold on to & I told them they were called stanchions, which they had never heard of. They also didn't know the tip of a shoelace is called an aglet!
Eric, this may be a timing issue, but if you are going to write about sports, how about giving propers to the passing of Willie Mays.
He was the best all round baseball player ever. When you measure hitting, fielding, base running, longevity and being a team player - no one comes close.
He served in Korea, he faced racial prejudice and he played the game with style.
Salute to you Willie!
Also, please note that 45% of the survey people are not all that excited about your White Sox loser items. We can look at the standings.
And maybe you should have a survey on your Caitlin Clark soap opera articles as well.
The Celtics just had a historic run to an NBA championship (number 18), might be worth mentioning…
i too salute 'Say Hey!' WIllie Mays. but he was not the greatest baseball player ever. although indeed he was probably the 1st and greatest 5-tool MLB player - hit, hit with power, run, field and throw.
but he wasn't Babe Ruth. the Babe was Shohei Ohtani long before Ohtani. one of the greatest pitchers of that decade. but so capable of hitting that the Yankees had him forsake pitching.
when the babe first hit 50+ HRs [1920], no other team hit that many HRs.
and even if you argue that WM ranks all time in running, fielding and throwing, his hitting stats pale in comparison to the babe's.
the babe changed the game of baseball. willie mays, great as he was, did not change the game. regardless, RIP, WIllie. those of us who saw you play, with enthusiasm and nobility, were blessed.
I go with Willie. The Babe never had to face the great Negro pitchers nor was relief pitching as developed. Willie gave two good “hitting years” to service in Korea. The Babe had no such problem.
He could feast off those 2 nd tier white pitching. Also Babe Ruth played on loaded teams forcing opposing teams to pitch to him rather than always walking him (though he did walk a lot).
The Babe was beloved, Willie faced a good deal of prejudice both on and off the field.
Yes the Babe changed baseball, but I wonder if they played during the same era (after 1947), who would be the better hitter.
But hey, two great great players…in the end let’s agree to disagree. These two guys are at the top of the hall of fame pantheon
you have a point on the Babe not facing great/any Negro [or, for that matter, Hispanic] pitchers in his day. but how many great Negro pitchers did WM face in the 1st half of his MLB career? not many, until the early or mid-'60s. and even by the mid-'60s, what % of the MLB pitchers were Black? [i don't know, just curious.]
i think you're right - they're probably GOATs 1a. and 1b., in whichever order you prefer. fun to argue, respectfully, about baseball - beats discussing the white sox!
I read 1440 news every day. Just the news with no bias or opinion. Lots of fun and educational links, too. On Willy they said “the greatest all around baseball player of all time”. They want you to send them a note if you detect any bias. I’ve done that maybe 4 times in a couple years, but, to your point, I told them they needed to say “considered by many” in front of that.
Does anyone remember the Leslie Stahl/Donald Trump interview? This was an interview, not a debate.
But when Leslie insisted on factual answers,Trump could not handle it and walked out.
The media does not seem to think that Trump would do the same thing in the upcoming debate. I personally think he will not show up.
The Republicans have cast Biden as a doddering old man, so if he just gives an “average” performance it will make them look bad.
Meanwhile Trump with muted microphones, Jake Tapper and no audience of Trump shills faces pretty bad odds of “winning” the debate. I bet he is a no show.
He's going to pull out at the very last minute (right up to the very end), shouting how the rules (agreed to by his camp) were "rigged against him - VERY unfair."
Fred, think you are right. Question is will Jake Tapper make Trump answer policy question and mute his microphone if he goes off in attack mode.
If the debate happens, will Jake Tapper ask the very relevant question “Was the last presidential election stolen? And if yes, what specific evidence do you have?”
Other questions like what is your policy on abortion, your policy on Obamacare and medical care in general, what is your current policy on the border…appears to be an open border policy will likely give Trump fits.
Trump is a coward and this debate requires some effort…I say he is a no show or will walk off in a huff early in the debate.
I agree with you. Trump will probably walk off during the debate or find an excuse not to debate and blame it on the “liberal media.” It also kind of looks like Trump is starting to experience some dementia.
I agree with Peter Zackrison. Trump will probably walk off during the debate or find an excuse not to debate and blame it on the “liberal media.” It also kind of looks like Trump is starting to experience some dementia.
Which "Ten commandments"? The list I learned in Catholic school? The other one taught to Protestants? I don't even know how the Jewish or Muslim folks report what Moses was told...
One more reason to keep religion out of our public schools
I have told this story before. When I was young on the south side we made lots of disparaging jokes and slurs about blacks. Adults did the same. But they did it in private amongst themselves. They would never have said those things in a public forum and certainly not where blacks were present. In public, all the white adults were not prejudiced. Some of their best friends were black. My point is that prejudice has always been there. It has not been reinstated by MAGAs. It is simply out in the open. No, it's not as if Republicans are looking into cameras and calling blacks inferior. They simply want history ignored as well as the barriers that still exist. If blacks would simply act more like whites, they would be more successful. Make sure the kids stay in school. That was easy for me. I didn't walk through gang neighborhoods to get to and from school.i didn't go to a crumbling school with few of the resources that suburban kids have. I could use up the next ten pages talking about the disadvantages that blacks still face, not the least being white assumptions about the capabilities of blacks and so-called natural tendencies toward animalistic behavior. Furthermore, what exactly is the "American " way of life that white racists keep touting? Where is this "American" way of life mentioned in the Constitution? What if non-Caucasians don't want to be just like us? I disagree strongly with Republicans and their attitudes, particularly in supporting Trump. Does that make me less of an American? I thought the founding documents encouraged diversity of thought. I was not aware that all Americabs were required to be just like the descendants of those from Merry Olde England and their European neighbors. We can also not blame those born into highly disadvantaged circumstances- not of their choice- to not all achieve what we did or have our attitudes or forget their heritage and adopt ours. No, I don't excuse things like crime and violence that happen most often in inner city neighborhoods. But I don't ignore the parts of our history that caused situations to exist. We know what too many Republicans are. We especially know what Donald Trump is.
I love the Mincing Rascals but it’s becoming too one sided — the addition of Marj Halperin was not a good addition. She seems to be the flip side of the John Kass coin!
Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich has written many articles on excessive corporate profits and/or CEO pay has contributed to high inflation. I won't go into specifics because I would probably mess up the details and misrepresent his ideas. But I believe one of his points is that CEOs will use the excuse of high inflation to keep prices higher, then instead of using the excess profits to raise employee pay or reinvest in capital equipment, the CEO will buy back shares of stock which increases the share price and helps get the CEO a bigger bonus because his compensation is tied directly to share price. Great short term not so great long term for the company and the people that work there. You can search for his articles, but Marj's idea has been theorized in the past.
Yes, it certainly has a part in inflation. But so does the global supply chain issues post Covid, the huge federal outpouring of money that pumped consumer demand and kept workers out of the labor market, the Fed keeping interest rates low for so long, the rent moratorium that eventually drove small landlords out of business so large companies now dominate the market (which feeds more greedflation) and the list goes on. It just isn't the singular reason for inflation that Marge was arguing on this week's Mincing Rascals.
When corporate profits and CEO salaries go up by more than the rate of inflation during an inflationary period, what does that tell us? That more than the money supply is involved.
Corporate CEO compensation has been skyrocketing over the past 20 years when inflation was flat. I am not defending corporate CEO pay, but just saying that if their pay is the only reason for inflation we would have had high inflation since the 90s.

The tweet about there should be a reverse Genius Grant to take money from dumb people. There is; the lottery.
My brother calls the lottery the "stupid tax".
I waste maybe $10 a year at most on the lottery, mostly as a joke when the prizes are over $100 million.
Yo Garry, if you win $100 million plus, how about starting the Garry Gazette.
If your rates are like Eric Zorn’s, sign me up!
I'll make it half the price of Zorn & ban anyone that likes Von Shitzenpantz or Conehead.
I agree with Peter Zackrison. Trump will probably walk off during the debate or find an excuse not to debate and blame it on the “liberal media.” It also kind of looks like Trump is starting to experience some dementia.
