Thanks for imagining that I wrote something that I didn’t. Who said anything about their diet, or being loafers? For all I know, most college graduates are simple bologna and cheese connoisseurs who work their asses off, but that isn’t the point. Having advanced degrees assures greater earning potential, breadth of opportunity, and is the surest ticket to upward mobility, so it isn’t like that burdensome debt doesn’t come accompanied with some considerable benefits. Cancelling that debt allows this privileged class to reap those benefits whilst putting the taxpayers (the majority of whom have not gone to college, and will not, on average, enjoy the same income potential and opportunities) on the hook to cover the cost of that privilege. That is a textbook definition of regressive taxation, and it is the last thing that Democrats should be jockeying for.

I’m not sure where you came up with this idea that the aim of student debt relief is merely to come to the rescue of low income people that have been bilked. For as long as I can remember, the demand for “free” college for everyone has been a hobbyhorse of the radical wing of the party, the Bernie Sanders types and such. Since they don’t think that anyone should have to pay for a higher education, they regard the very idea of student debt to be an unconscionable moral outrage, on par with denying a pregnant rape victim access to abortion, or leaving elderly people to die in sweltering heat, or demanding a Gen Z-er refrain from looking at their phone for two minutes.

Right wing caricature? Yeah, uh, no.
