Replying to Lynne Allen Taylor: My point is simply to refute the notion that Trump was somehow an illegitimate president because he did not win a majority of the popular vote. The fact is that his support, rightly or wrongly - and somewhat surprisingly - was quite widespread throughout the country. If the US had a direct popular vote system, both campaigns would have likely been much different and we have no idea how it might have turned out. (Neither Bill nor Hillary Clinton, by the way, ever won more than a plurality of the popular vote, something of particular disappointment to Bill Clinton during his second term. But don’t rely on me; you can look it up on the Cook Political Report.) As for Illinois, for better or for worse, we are both captives of a one-party state that has a supermajority of one party in the state legislature as well as a governor and a state Supreme Court dominated by the same party, and that has gerrymandered its U. S. Congressional delegation from 12 Rs and 7 Ds in 2010 to 3 Rs and 14 Ds following the loss of two representatives as a result of the last two censuses.
