Your comment on the Pence photo was 100 times more clever than the one in the contest. It suffered mightily from the fact that Mrs Pence was not in the “audience” but rather standing next to him which I didn’t notice at first making me scan the audience first and think “huh?” I do think some clever kind of comment could gave been made about the fact that he was speaking at what appears to be a CVS. But obviously I’m not clever enough to think of it.

We love Unforgotten and I loved seeing Hayley Mills again. I watched Parent Trap on Wonderful World of Disney in the 70s and had no idea who she was but admired her acting. She’s still got it.

My problem with the Republican side of Trump vs. Biden is that the Republican side invariably quotes supposed facts that aren’t true, so it’s impossible to respect any of those people.

I have an idea for the Bears. Many, many years ago the Packers had an accurate QB named Bart Starr. Yet they drafted a Heisman winning QB named Paul Hornung. What to do?

They played both players, Starr stayed under center and Hornung played halfback. Many touchdowns were scored on the famous Green Bay sweep with Hornung becoming the first run/pass option player. This worked very well and the Packers dominated in that era.

Why not keep Tyson under center (he appears to be more accurate) and put Justin in the back field or in the slot. Justin is an awesome runner with a strong arm. Why not a Bears sweep using both these talented players?

And use that sweep and other plays to destroy the Packers at Green Bay this season.

I believe this is timely since Dick Butkus recently passed away. My dad, a Packers fan like myself, said he saw the famous Green Bay sweep fail against the Bears because of Butkus. Butkus would use his body to take out the 3 blockers so the Bear player behind him could tackle the runner with the ball. Dad said the of all the players in the NFL at the time Vince Lombardi said Green Bay could not do certain plays because of one player, Dick Butkus.

“Usage note: To me, “tweet” has become a generic term for a short post on social media”

Has what’s-his-name, the Space-X / Tesla guy, proposed a new name for the messages on the platform once known as Twitter?

I am hopeful that there are enough centrists GOP and Dems to get a new speaker. I am also hopeful that the drubbing of the clown caucus and the animus they have generated in the other GOPers is the indication of a meaningful shift.

Marc, you are spot on. Now that moderate Republicans are getting the hate messages from the Trump/Jordan followers, they may get a spine and work a deal with the Democrats.

Trump and Jordan never forgive and never forget - so you might as well do the right thing and get the House functional.

They should take Mike Pence as their model, once you fall out of line, there is no coming back.

It is so sad seeing Pence running for President and yet still trying to endear himself with Trump and his Trumpers. They only hate him more for his compromise attempts.

Well, the moderates caved and we have anti-everything election denier as Speaker. I think the Dems would have been much better off lending some support to Tom Emmer when they had the chance. Apparently there are purity police on both sides.

When I answer a poll, this is the response I always get: "We were unable to record your vote. Please refresh the page and try again."

My understanding is that if you're not logged in to Substack it doesn't recognize you as a subscriber and the polling app embedded in Substack only allows subscribers -- paid and unpaid! -- to vote. That MAY be your issue, and I wish it weren't the case.

Half of all Americans voting for trump? Thank god that's not true....the majority did NOT vote for him, twice. And other than 1%, how was the economy better under the bankruptcy prone business failure that is trump?

Expand full comment

Not even half of all voters voted for Trump, in 2016 nor in 2020.

Not uncommon. Bill Clinton never got a majority popular vote either. And "dubya" fell well short in 2020

Still a shockingly large number of millions of votes. Is it good news that only 47% of the voters went for him? (Well, yes, in terms of the outcome, but still).

“Skeptic’s” question about driving around a truck that stops suddenly or dumps something on a full highway describes a bad driver. Who can’t stop faster than a truck stopping in front of you? A robot car would do that easily, just using the radar-controlled brakes. And the idea that we need to worry about harm-minimizing when avoiding stuff falling in front of me? The robot car, like a good driver, already knows where it’s going to go if something crazy happens ahead. I get a nervous, boxed-in feeling that keeps me from tailgating when traffic is fast and heavy. Who remembers “Leave yourself an out?”

You forgot "10 O'clock and 2 O'clock positions on the steering wheel"

I never understood that one. All formula and GT racing car steering wheels are designed for 3 and 9, which allows a full 90 degree turn in both directions without releasing the wheel with either hand. Even Nascar drivers do 3 and 9 now.

I agree, but the "Smith System" mandated 10-2. (I think for long drives 10-2 is less fatiguing on the arms).

10 and 2 is now discouraged as being in the path of the airbag. Go 9-3 or 8-4.

Good point. My general point was to point out ethical choices that have to be made. You can imagine situations where hazards become apparant suddenly. We accept that human split second decisions are different from ones that are thought out. This really matters when are decisions cause tragic outcomes. With a robot car everyrhing it does is bases on its programming which is well thought out.

Would you buy a robot car that does not put your safety ahead of all else?

Expand full comment

I would want to know that the car does the best it can to avoid its own damage and destruction. As far as it prioritizes what NOT to hit, I would expect it to avoids people and vehicles first. I don’t think the systems will need to be engineered to evaluate multiple harm-reducing safety responses during an accident.

The situation in Israel is difficult to solve. I am glad it is not my responsibility. In this case, both sides say that they were responding to actions of the other side. For Hamas, it was actions over the past years; for Israel, it was the latest terrorist attacks. I think we need a new King Solomon.

The person that called himself a conservative and tried to explain things from his perspective was probably correct- in how a few other conservatives feel. That's part of the problem. I have spent most of my life bemoaning other peole that claim to speak for me by claiming that Americans believe this or that. The only real truth is that most Americans agree on almost nothing. That is actually the beauty of our system. that our tradtion allows people to have differing views. The problem with this particular person is not only assuming things not in evidence but assuming how many agree with him. The number of criminals crossing over doesn't add up, Biden's feelings about trans has no basis in facts. Trump kept them in Mexico? Not even close! I won't debate whether or not anyone is right or wrong to feel a certain way. My point is to stick the facts and use those to boost one's case. And don't assume how I feel. Speak for yourself.

Laurence - my statement was that "about half the country" was presently inclined to vote for Trump in the case of a trump-biden rematch. National public opinion polls have pretty much consistently shown respondents split pretty evenly between Trump and Biden, hence my comment about half the country.
