Of course it's number 6. Because you don't just take that little piece -- it comes with one (or, with luck in the right situation, both) of the pieces on either side. Giving you even more crust. Pure genius.

Great edition of the PS today! Pizza, pop stars and politics divide us because.... well I think humans just like to form groups to be in opposition. It has been that way since the beginning of civilization. When a thing become more than just a thing, but something that partially defines our identity then that is funny and weird. But we can't help but do it.

"Stuffed and deep-dish pizza is made from standard pizza ingredients — cheese, tomato sauce, crust and toppings/fillings"

So are calzones, but that doesn't make them pizza.

IMO, an essential quality which makes something "pizza" is that the toppings are exposed to the the air in the oven. If cheese is on top then it will brown, and if you have bottom cheese the the sauce cooks and gets more concentrated. putting cheese and sauce under a crust make them cook differently.

Whether pizza is cooked in a pan or the dough is laid directly on a surface in the oven does not change the telos of the thing. It is still pizza. And there is a huge range of what gets cooked in a pan. There is Chicago style, South Shore Bar pizza, Detroit Style (which was called Sicilian style when I was a kid), and others. Stuffed pizza is pushing the limits.

I like all of them including the thin crust variaties of NY style, neapolitan style, and St. Louis style. No one of them is better than any of the other.

But what really matters is where does Taylor Swift stand on pizza styles? I will go with whatever Tay-Tay likes.

EZ, I can't believe you had no thoughts or comments on yesterday's spectacle of the city council and the mayor issuing a pretty one sided resolution about the horrific events in Gaza that served to divide our city needlessly, as it will do absolutely nothing to change the minds or behaviors of Hamas or Netanyahu. During a week when we had two drive by mass shootings of high school students leaving school our city leaders and the CTU, who obviously have no solutions to bring peace and stability to our own city, chose to involve themselves in international relations. If their actions didn't stoke antisemitism and hurt Biden before we host the Democratic convention, it would be almost comical. So much for Johnson being "collaborative". It is more evidence that his union organizer roots make him a better grandstander than a competent executive able to manage this city's many challenges.

Expand full comment

Johnson has showed he's Not Ready For Prime Time, as he has absolutely no executive abilities & if you glance at that weird & vile Second City Cop blog like I do occasionally, they are constantly calling him Conehead & say he's been hospitalized for "stress" several times since becoming mayor. I have no idea if that's true. If it is true, then he needs to resign.

I found it additionally reprehensible that the mayor apparently convinced four alders to 'miss the vote' in order to guarantee its passage. One wonders what they were promised or what the retribution they feared. It's also possible that they were easily convinced because they are also gutless and preferred not to be on record. But everyone should understand that the Democratic Socialists in the council believe that they are addressing the most important issues and believe that 'being heard' is a very high priority item, when it means the issues that are important to them. They also demonstrated, once again, that the only voices they are interested in hearing are their own, since they refused to even consider any compromise language.

I just went to Mary Schmich's FB page to post information about the Guild's strike today.

change it to "squathole", have Jim Bachor the mosaic pothole artist fill it in, and hopefully put the story to rest.

Even if the reality is that it is a squirrel hole, Chicagoans don't care about reality! Mrs. O'Leary's cow didn't really start the Great Fire, the Sears Tower is really called the Willis Tower, "The Bean" isn't meant to be a bean, etc. We don't let "facts" get in the way of our fun.

Expand full comment

It will always be Sears to me, not because of any love for Sears, but because it's still the Chrysler Building in NYC, even though Walter Chrysler's children sold it after he died & it's been sold four more times since then & it still retains the name & because Sears paid cash for the building, $150 million at the time, no mortgage! On top of that, when the British Willis Company bought the naming rights for $15 million, that money came from the taxpayers of Chicago, of which I'm one, as the city gave Willis a $15 million tax subsidy to move their US HQ here at the time!

Eric, will support the Tribune folks by not accessing anything Tribune today. Will tell my friends to do the same.

I am not optimistic that it will bring any results, but want to show support.

I wonder if a better strategy is to tank the Tribune and get a new owner to buy it at a bargain. This would be an enlightened owner interested in then rebuilding the paper into a new improved company that pays its employees fairly.

It seems like a challenge that could interest a billionaire wanting to do something constructive with his/her money.

Unfortunately, the line of wealthy enlightened prospective newspaper owners is awfully short.

New word of the day for me!

gainsay | ˌɡānˈsā |

verb (past and past participle gainsaid) [with object and negative] formal

deny or contradict (a fact or statement): the impact of the railroads cannot be gainsaid.

Expand full comment

So to use it in a sentence…if the running back can gainsay two yards he will get a first down.

Sorry…I’m a slow learner and very very bad punster.

Like to point out that punster is gender neutral but yet implies goofy old men posting goofy posts.

I always thought “gainsay” had an element of “showing to be false”, not just contradicting.

Better pizzas use Roma tomatoes not tomato sauce. Same argument as hotdogs (I.e., it tastes better).

I would love to be an election judge, it pays really well, but I'm old & can't do a full day, which is at least 14 hours, but I'd do a half day for half the money, but they don't allow that!

I just did election judge training today and I am amazed how much goes into the job. The day is long, you are right. Judges must start at 5 a.m. and go to 7 p.m. I am pooped after a half-day of training. Luckily dry January is over😁; I need a glass of wine.

I am a long time Cook County election judge but I'm not there for the $$, I would do it for free to ensure fair, well-run elections. It's a long day - we arrive at 5 am and are usually there for an hour after the polls close (so 8pm). Then the technician and one other judge must take the ballots, SD card, and more to the drop off location so they have an even longer night. Honestly, it's a lot of sitting, not much exertion necessary. So long as enough judges show up, one can take frequent breaks. I mostly am assigned to the precinct where I live so I know lots of people and meet new neighbors. My younger child served as an election judge while in high school and is bummed they'll miss is being away at college for the primary and general elections in 2024.

Sitting all day is exhausting, especially when you're old & have all the aches & pains of that!

Full disclosure - I grew up on the east coast. I’ve also lived in the Chicago area now for over 40 years. Deep dish pizza tastes good. But IMHO it’s not real pizza. Perhaps it should be called deep dish “pizza” with quotation marks to indicate the word is a euphemism. It also is not “Chicago pizza.” Mike Royo did an entire column on this explaining what the pizza of his youth on Taylor St in Chicago was. Deep dish was invented by a guy from Dallas who convinced Lou Malnati to make it.

I do think the argument over which is better - deep dish pizza or NY pizza can never be settled, nor should it. Taste is subjective. You can like both because they taste so differently. Do hotdogs taste better than hamburgers? Who cares. Enjoy them both!

White chocolate has cocoa butter in it, so it's sorta chocolate. It's not horrible. It's not even bad. But yeah, it's not really chocolate.

I'm with you. 3 or 4, and maybe one of those little corner nibbles to round it out. Thank gawd for those who love the messy middle pieces. I get along very well we them.

(1) I thought the "I want to be like Mommy" was funny. Then I scrolled down and saw the bottom half of the tweet and laughed out loud. On first glance, I did not see a shovel. (2) The entire line up of visual tweets was fun. (3) The poll on which slice of pizza I would take first is irrelevant. With a skinny crust pizza like that, I would be taking 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, and their neighbors. I'll leave 6 behind so I don't look too piggy.
