I've very glad to meet you Uncle Duke. Photo dumps?! Who knew, um I guess that's me who does not even have a Twitter account. In a world with such horrible daily news, it's worth a lot to get a good visual and a giggle so thanks! I would've voted for all the Tweets this week so I had a few good giggles this am.
I would vote yes on the graduations. I have such a great memory of my 8th grade. We lived in a neighborhood where white families were fleeing; eventually ours did as well. We all didn't understand why we couldn't just all get along right? So we were all being scattered to the suburbs and such and so very bittersweet after growing up in Brainard (which I found out doesn't exist anymore -how does that even happen?) I had broken my foot and walked with a handsome black boy who had broken his arm. Our class sang Big 10 school fight songs. Mom made me a pretty dress. We cried a lot. So long ago.
So great to get the background on Uncle Duke - He sounds just how I imagined him (except the New Yorker part). Figures that someone with such wit is named Eric!
As the TV weatherman pulls out an N95 mask this morning to demonstrate how to filter the air, I realize how much progress Chicago has made. In the old days, bad air would have come from South Side and Indiana steel mills. Now, thanks to the Canadian fires, we have organic pollution. Imported, of course.
I see the Tribune as a single entity - the marketing department, reporters, editors etc all make up this enterprise.
You seem to be saying - hey the writers are really good guys so it’s okay to have the marketing folks jerk you around. Nope do not buy it.
In producing the Sentinel you are very fair and consistent in charging for it. Your actions tell me what you really think of the Trib by avoiding any of their bogus pricing crap.
I get what Eric is saying - the journalists follow journalist ethics and there is a Chinese wall between the journalists and the marketing/advertising/opinion divisions. One part can be good and another part absolute trash even though they all are employed by the same entity.
Not at all. Just don't blame the journalists for the misdeeds of the marketing/circulation folks. You can respect the journalists while hating on the business side.
Back to the issue - while you respect the journalists and dislike marketing - what do you do? Accept the unfair pricing and pay or demand consistent and transparent pricing?
I call them constantly to get a better rate. You can't accept the rate they bill, you have to call and get it lowered and when they raise it again you call again. It's a pain in the rear but my special needs son loves getting the physical newspaper daily so I don't switch to online only.
I had an 8th grade graduation ceremony back in 1954 in Montana. We even had a xeroxed yearbook which I still have. Until recently we all used to meet up at the old grade school whenever there was a high school class reunion.
I applaud the Sun-Times policy of eliminating information on folks that deserve the privacy. But let’s get real - they are only one source.
Your example of Mr. Smollett is kind of moot. Do you really believe if the Sun-Times eliminated everything on him that suddenly his privacy would be restored?
There are many other papers, magazines - lots of other sources that will forever have information and opinions on Mr. Smollett.
The Sun-Times is but one of many sources - I am afraid in this world of the internet and the many trolls who add false information will make it near impossible for a person to eliminate unfair information.
The policy is good and we should support it - but recognize it is very limited in scope.
Most deeply touching Father song I can think of is Michael Smith's "I Brought My Father With Me." Always a chill, often a tear. (Which is alright, Dad was ever worth "bringing" along like that.) Fred Neill's "Child's Song" (a favorite of Lin Brehmer's) also comes to mind.
I really did not have any strong feelings one way or the other whether there should be a graduation ceremony for completion of eighth grade.
But perhaps the far bigger question in Chicago is whether Chicago high schools should have a graduation ceremony with the abysmally low percentage of students who are able to read and do math at grade level. It is the height of hypocrisy and a sad commentary when Chicago Public Schools touts an ever increasing graduation rate, now at 87.5%, while a supermajority of students cannot perform academically at grade level.
How nice to meet Uncle Duke. Loved his references to Semitic, Catskills humor and Warner Bros. cartoons—the good ones, that is. You do know there’s a difference, right?

And if you overpay on your Trib subscription that is okay because of the Chinese wall?

Seems to me that we agree after all - I wish you continued success on getting a good rate.
And I think we all need to pressure the Trib to switch to a fair billing policy.

Uncle Duke could easily become a megastar. His humility and candor makes him even more fascinating.
