I suppose the "Jackie" taunt may seem like ordinary trash talking, but what resulted into a bench-clearing brawl shows it isn't. The name Jackie Robinson is sacrosanct in MLB. For many, it is disrespectful to use it in an insulting manner, as clearly it was by Donaldson.

If the name of Jackie Robinson is "sacrosanct" as you state, then wasn't it also wrong for Anderson to claim to be the new Jackie Robinson? While Donaldson is a jerk, he was mocking Anderson for his self gratuitous analogy to Jackie Robinson, and there is absolutely nothing to indicate he was denigrating Robinson himself. (But, if you are going to respond that Anderson had license to talk about Jackie Robinson because he is black and that Donaldson does not because he is white, my response would be you are asserting a form of black privilege which I would see as racist.)

I'm not going to take the time to go back to the quotation, but I recall Anderson said something like he "felt like" Jackie Robinson. He did not "claim to be the new Jackie Robinson." Big difference. Reminder to us all: if you're going to criticize somebody for something they said, use the exact quote - not a paraphrase.

So, let me see if I am able to follow your logic. You begin your comment by admitting that you are not going to take the time to go back and look at the actual quote. But then you close with a reminder to use the exact quote. Seems a bit inconsistent.

Here's Anderson's exact quote...

“I kind of feel like today’s Jackie Robinson." Seems pretty clear that he is presenting himself as a contemporary version of Jackie Robinson.

So I believe my original point remains the same. Donaldson was mocking Anderson for presenting himself in this very self gratuitous manner. Nothing racist about that.

Not inconsistent. I remembered well enough the part you included. "Feels like" is not a claim.

I see. You stated that you did not take the time to look up the actual quote before you suggested that everyone use the exact quote, and now you say that you remembered well enough and that your interpretation of "feels like" does not mean that he is claiming to be like Jackie Robinson. O.K. then.

Here's the full quote: “I kind of feel like today’s Jackie Robinson. That’s huge to say. But it’s cool, man, because he changed the game, and I feel like I’m getting to a point to where I need to change the game.”

The difference between your original comment, and mine, is that you used an interpretation - "presenting himself as a contemporary version of Jackie Robinson" - to criticize Anderson; while I just advised us to stick with verbatim quotes if we're going to criticize someone, and I was not criticizing Anderson.

I believe I said it's disrespectful to use the name in a insulting manner, which is the definition of trash talking, is it not?

I don't think many are denying that Donaldson was being disrespectful in the way he chided Anderson. So, yeah, sure, trash talking. Get me to the fainting couch (where I can relax and read about the legendary in-game insults Michael Jordan used to dish out. And Larry Bird. Two of my all-time favorite White Sox are Tim Anderson and A.J. Pierzynski -- the type of guys you love as team-mates, but would hate as opponents. Also, Benetti and Stone are the very best announcing team in Chicago TV baseball history, and I've been around for all of it.

If you see an advertisement - it's helping bring some company money. As for other Super Star endorsements - if you have doubt about celebrity to purchase connection... who doubts that Michael Jordan has helped sell shoes. Does Guaranteed Rate push people to get mortgages? Maybe or maybe not - but who ever heard of the company before labeling White Sox park?

I suppose I did, but it didn't mean anything to me. Still doesn't.

"Public apology is a useless and self-defeating ritual." It wasn't long ago that people would say a public apology would have gone a long way. David Letterman ended a lot of anger when he publicly apologized for his actions. People thought Blago should have apologized and lest we forget the infamous Jussie Smollett
