Re: Chicago Tonight moving to 10:00 pm — a mistake. The networks’ 10:00 pm format of a few hits of “if it bleeds, it leads” is only tolerable because it gets us to the real reason we watch: the weather segment. Not interested in extended political discussion at 10:00 pm; I only want to know if I should plan for an umbrella or a snowblower in the morning.

As someone who watches this almost every night, I don't like it. I like Chicago Tonight at 7:00pm and I have viewed it since the Calloway days. I think this is a real boneheaded move. They should have mentioned this when they send out their subscription renewal. I might have reconsidered as this is my favorite program on Channel 11. And one hour is fine. At 10:00pm I am doing other things plus at 10:00pm it is shown on their other station....370 on Comcast. Love the people on the show, but management at channel 11 is either really smart of really dumb here. We'll see. Especially when they start begging for more money which should be about in a week. Maybe they are just too smart for me. But you can't get this news anywhere else.

My mistake. They came begging for more money about three hours after this. Talking up another British TV show. We'll see. They better be right or let's see a change at the top. For a public television station I always get a little nauseated when I see how much the top guy gets paid. Especially when their really not much smarter than me.

Football is a good sport to watch, though I don't anymore, but I think wrestling is the best sport for the competitors. No other sport requires such a mixture of skills--strength, quickness, stamina, strategy--and each person is always competing against someone approximately their size.

I love this week’s Picayune Sentinel, might be your best ever! I loved your recommendations from friends and colleagues ( I have been enjoying Eilen Jewell since I saw her at SPACE a few years ago) and made a note to return to the Little Red Schoolhouse, a childhood favorite, and to look for A Constellation of Phenomena. I have always debated whether to leave my wreath up until Ash Wednesday or Easter? I tend towards Ash Wednesday when Easter is in April…Meanwhile, Happy Birthday! January 6 is and always will be 3 Kings Day, a day to eat Galette des Rois! Thanks!

I thought this batch of tweets was excellent. Best in a long time. No fall off perceived.

I found nothing amusing about any of them again this week. But I think that timing and moods vary in appreciating humor. I also think that all things that are from a large pool of sources will go through ups and downs. So, I say persevere. Keep on keeping on. I am willing to look forward to the day when I am amused, and the drought probably makes it better.

Eilen Jewell must have to spell her name a lot.

Why not keep Chicago Tonight at 7 pm and just repeat it at 10 pm?

When I was a rabbit-ears viewer, as recently as 7-8 years ago, I devoutly wished that Chicago Tonight aired at 10pm, allowing 4-5 more hours of prime time, weeknight PBS programming (depending on what they did with weekly review Fridays): NOVA for sure, probably Frontline and/or American Experience, another hour for performance and/or artists, etc. I now find that opinion just as valid as I did then.

It actually does repeat at 10:00pm now. 370 on comcast.

Regarding not paying attention to all the lyrics of a song. Years ago a friend said she started paying more attention to what music was on in the car when her 6 yr old daughter was belting out “Jack and Diane” from her car seat.

If there aren't 10 strong tweets, I'm fine with having fewer from which to choose the best.

And as someone whose birthday is 9-11, my sympathy for you is limited. When I have to provide my birthdate for various purposes (like at a medical office) it's not unusual for the person asking to gasp or even comment when they hear my answer. I do hope the 6th is a happy day for you.

EZ -

I agree that there are fewer purveyors of great tweets when compared to a year ago. But there is still a good selection out there. Like the "Ya Gotta" segment. For those who like science and history, for book recommendations I recommend almost anything by Simon Winchester, but particularly:

"The Map That Changed the World - William Smith and the Birth of Modern Geology" and

"The Perfectionists: How Precision Engineers Created the Modern World".

Also, David Schneider, MD's "The Invention of Surgery: A History of Modern Medicine: From the Renaissance to the Implant Revolution".

BTW, Happy Birthday!

I don't know what all the thinking is behind scheduling TV shows, but I would have placed the new 30-minute format for Chicago Tonight at 5:30. Then it would be opposite the useless national network news shows and be a lead-in to the PBS Newshour. I like the local network news. I also like the BBC, DW, and occasionally France24. I miss Al Jazeera. All of the 'world' news coverage is shallow and superficial, including PBS Newshour.

I am hoping that the GOP speaker fight actually pushes the majority of the party towards the center, and that they will ultimately punish the troublemakers politically. Rather than standing to the side and gloating, it would be great for some centrists Democrats to make a deal with McCarthy for their votes. McCarthy could do the same. And then they could all proclaim a spirit of bipartisanship to do the work they are supposed to be doing. McCarthy could say he tried to reason with the fringe, and it wasn't possible. Or we just have a few hundred more rounds of votes.

The fact that the FDA had to be involved in a decision about what pharmacies carry is another example of our excessive, slow, and frequently pointless regulatory structure. Another example this week was in an article in the Trib about Hepatitis C testing. Apparently, backward countries like England and Australia have a Hep C test that takes a drop of blood and produces results in 15 minutes. The test and equipment were developed by a California company a decade ago. But the US only has a test that takes several days. The FDA is still thinking about it.

so glad to read that you agree with our reaction to Chicago Tonight moving to 10 pm-and I wrote an email to tell them so (we have been members and contributors to WTTW for more years than I remember. We watch anotherr channel at 10 and will continue to do same. CT covered those local stories no one else does. Too bad-makes you wonder who decides this stuff. Can't say we didn't try.

Right. And they usually need an hour. Sometimes it can get a little long, but not around election time. Valuable information.

I was talking to a friend about Rep. Santos, and she wondered if the media and Santo's opponent, were afraid to appear to be anti-LGBTQ+ by attacking the character of a gay candidate for office. That would be an interesting trick-bag that they would need to work out, if that is the case.

Santos's Democratic opponent Robert Zimmerman is also gay.
