One more thought on Fountain. I wonder if this is partially due to so many people working remotely. If meetings could have been held in person it might have deescalated the situation.

Well, as a freelance columnist , Fountain, who has a full time job as a journalism professor, wouldn't have been in the office for this interaction in any event. Still, I think you're right in principle that the lack of an in-person relationship can lead to frostier, more tense interactions.

I edit people who work in NYC, DC and Atlanta daily. You don't have to share office space to be collegial or develop a relationship with colleagues. I give feedback and discuss things if I have a big issue with something. They also respect my editing because I respect their work. First job of an editor is to improve writing and preserve the writer's voice, not to rewrite (or reorganize) things because you would have written it differently.

Sorry, I don’t get the “Acoustic Escalator.” 🤷‍♂️

An acoustic guitar is a guitar that doesn’t plug in, and it’s resonance is not determined by electrically amplified sound. The photo in the tweet was of something that appeared to be an escalator, but was, in fact, a perfectly ordinary flight of stairs. No electricity required.

Yes, "Amish escalator" would also work, but "acoustic escalator" is funnier, because it subtly pokes at pompous purity preferences among pop music aficionados.

Tell me about it. Always a quaint moment when someone asks what an acoustic guitar is, and I just say “uh, you know, an ordinary one, like the kind with a hole in it”.

I feel your pain with the tickets to the game.

I have recently begun to get to the airport early enough to get a printed boarding pass for my flights. I found myself too often standing in the boarding line worrying about battery life, brightness on the phone, sleep mode, and notifications popping up at just the wrong time. Paper is actually easier and faster when boarding. I am a frequent flier and early adopter of boarding passes on my phone. No longer.

Ted M. With regards to style, I will admit that Fountain does have a somewhat an idiosyncratic style, which is part of its charm. I read him his column regularly. Why, I do not think he has much to say, but I usually enjoy his column. When the Sun-Times hired Fountain I presumed they liked his style and approach to writing a column. The new editor at the Times went beyond bounds of editing in re-writing Fountain's column, removing much of his voice. Every publication has boundaries and rules (peculiar words for issues of boundaries and taste), as these were neither matters of "boundaries" nor "rules", but differences in manner of taste and style.

I haven’t checked out the Sun Times charter, but it’s possible that they may have some language in it prohibiting “pompous asininity”, although I have my doubts.

It's the Phellodendron amurense Ruprecht. Even when it was the Smilax Glabra Roxb, it was the Phellodendron amurense Ruprecht. I'm snorting some now, and, let me tell you, delish!

Seriously, googling reveals this seeming gibberish to be a collection of plant extracts used in traditional Chinese "medicine." Hey, if it works, it works.

I would have voted for “The Queen’s Terminal”, but since the poster couldn’t be bothered to properly punctuate, it disqualified him. “Acoustic Escalator” gets my vote.

Disappointed on the further comments concerning editor/writer. If the stated hope is for them to reconcile then privacy is needed. People are making points and continuing the debate in the public sphere - interesting but not any help if we want these two to work something out.

I think it best to simply say that these are two professional people who need to meet and work out a positive solution. And to encourage them to do so.

Ok, ok, ok, I know what an acoustic guitar is, I just didn't get the joke. Thanks everyone for helping explain :-)
