however, that's not why i get 1st crack at the VQotWs - i live in the Eastern time zone - a built-in head start.

As this very bad, terrible, ghastly year draws to a close, I would like to wish everyone a very happy holiday (may your god, if you have one, go with you) and peace and joy in the New Year. "Everyone" does not include Trump, his rump osculators and enablers, his funders, or the cowards who capitulate to him. A murrain upon them!

Laurence E Siegel's avatar

It’s actually rather depressing, I don’t want to feel that way about any human, especially a White House resident. But he has hurt a lot of people and doesn’t care.

M. de Hendon (926577)'s avatar

I don't judge Agent Orange as a person (though I have my opinion) but think the harm he has caused in unforgiveable.

I think it was Dan Pfeiffer who said "There is some good in everyone ... except Stephen Miller."

Laurence E Siegel's avatar

I know there is great temptation to do the right thing and not judge others because none of us is perfect. But the orange stain is just too easy. There is a big difference between harming others due to human error and doing it deliberately to benefit bones self. I read a Vegas paper yesterday and saw an editorial praising the orange stain for cutting the federal workforce. But that’s mere numbers. Who and what got cut and who got hurt? What was the basis for some getting cut? It was inhuman.

Trump's is an addict, who’s drug of choice is wielding power, so he’s constantly seeking new ways to wield power, chasing that high.

Poll question" Will the sociopathic, demented, deranged, fat, moronic, fascist traitor in the White House even be alive on December 31, 2026? He is obviously dying of cancer & who knows what else.

And thanks for the link to the 60 Minutes segment. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, other than not kowtowing to the sociopathic, demented, deranged, fat, moronic, fascist traitor in the White House!

I read the Trib online on a computer & have been having that idiotic magnification happening almost every day for the last few days. So I just hit the arrow to go back one page & then go forward & it corrects it. But having to choose every time the text size & show one whole page at a time is absurd. It should remember my choices.

What incompetent IT company did they hire to do this?

Always so hard to tell what GSC really thinks of Trump

Garry Spelled Correctly's avatar

I try to never actually use his name, it disgusts me that a useful. regular word is now a vile obscenity!

Laurence E Siegel's avatar

Not since the beginning of his first term have I used "president " and Trump in the same sentence. At the very most I say current resident of the White House.

DAVID O.'s avatar

Well, you just blew that streak!

Laurence E Siegel's avatar

Very astute observation! But I still didn’t use them together.

DAVID O.'s avatar

Don't feel bad. I had 330 consecutive Wordle solves. Was looking forward to an entire year. Just forgot to do it one day last month. It takes you back to 0 even though there was no miss. So much for that streak...

Laurence E Siegel's avatar

Be aware that the cringing chickens are already gathering around the silly hillbilly Vance.

Garry Spelled Correctly's avatar

He's gonna be running against halfwitted, cokehead son Donnie Junior & they are within a few points of each other in polling.

I just can't imagine how anyone could even consider a drugged out moron, but then they do worship his insane moron father!

Laurence E Siegel's avatar

After reading your comment, I did some online research. The polls are all over the map. Yes, he seems to be second to Vance. His biggest draw, according to campaign specialists is that he is not a Washington insider and the way he talks draws him to younger males. His total lack of political experience, other than advising his father, seems actually to be an advantage. I call bullshit. Not being elected to anything doesn't mean he's not a politician. He has been a member of policy groups and recommended appointments to his father. He is responsible for Kennedy, a personal friend, which means he already has a black mark with me. He is a vice-president of the Trump Organization, which is a criminal organization that got his father convicted. It's also being used in Deals to make money for Trump in the White House, while giving the orange stain cover to claim he has nothing to with them. This family is worse than the Mafia. They ignore business ethics and the tax codes. Supporting him is more MAGa insanity, supporting criminality.

There have been a lot of quips circulating to ridicule the redacted Epstein files, my favorite so far is that Kasimir Malevich has been releasing Epstein files long before it was cool (reference to his 1915 masterpiece Black Square)

CBS News lost me while ago. The news has been my 3rd favorite, but I watched some Scott Pelley and Norah O’Donnell. I never saw Jeff Glor, and I only saw Dickerson and DuBois once.

When I was in college I used to go to our common room every evening to watch Walter Kronkite report on the Iran hostages. I never saw any othe network news back then.

Phillip Seeberg's avatar

I don’t know why Bowen Yang left SNL, but I’ve seen him in so many movies (and I don’t see a lot) that he probably is ready to launch. He’s a funny guy, but SNL has people play caricatures and he may want to try something a bit different .

Garry Spelled Correctly's avatar

I'm ecstatic he's gone. Every character he played was just the really gay guy, that got boring fast!

Elena Lojo's avatar

I also gave up on most of CBS News but haven’t stopped watching CBS Sunday Morning, which somehow still seems balanced? I have my radar up for changes but haven’t noticed any.

Phillip Seeberg's avatar

Regarding the video link to where I talk about my first Christmas, I have since learned that many people feel lonely at the holidays. Those who have had a loss of a parent for example. Over the years I’ve gone from thinking that my story is unique to realizing that everyone’s story is unique. And that sadness is why I like Mary Schmich’s song β€˜Gonna Sing’. It gets sung every Songs of Good Cheer. This year someone else sang it (very well), but I hope Mary sings it again next year.

Eric Zorn's avatar

Mary has never sung that song on stage. Here is a video of the cast singing along to Chris Walz's version as we hung out in the recording studio. https://youtu.be/99KwKnERjEU

Our album is available to stream on Spotify.

Phillip Seeberg's avatar

Hmm. I think she sang A song last year. Maybe a different one? Or maybe my mind is going.

Phillip Seeberg's avatar

Regarding the article talking about telling people β€œyou look great!” , that’s the type of thing explained in Steven Pinker’s new book, β€œWhen everyone knows that everyone knows…” about common knowledge and human behavior in that arena. Very interesting book that I just finished.

Laurence E Siegel's avatar

It doesn't bother when I tell people how old I am and they respond with something like "No way! I would have guessed 55!" I appreciate their kindness. But they are so full of #$%^! What else are they lying about? On the other hand , they could just say "Good God, you look old! When do you croak?"

Phillip Seeberg's avatar

I had to vote for the visual tweet about the gift being for birthday and for Christmas in honor of my brother who has a Dec 20 birthday. But I would have voted 10 times for the Bondi Scooby Doo picture where she pulls the mask off the villain to reveal [redacted].

Melinda Abney Kaiser's avatar

Both my kids have January birthdays and some relatives give dual Xmas/b-day gifts. It's a little useful because if my kids get something for Christmas that requires something else, birthday is the perfect opportunity to fulfill that need. One year an aunt gave my kids Apple watches, thinking they'd work with their iPads (they don't). With birthdays so soon after Christmas, the kids each got iPhones for their birthdays to replace their Samsungs. Or if there was something they really wanted for Christmas and didn't get, we can address it at the immediately following birthday.

Regarding the America First pricing at national parks, the first reaction is to say β€˜bad’ because of where the idea came from; but I’ve been to plenty of places that have discounted admission for residents of a city or county. In Europe, EU residents get discounts at some places I’ve been to. So some $ amount would be okay.

John Houck's avatar

I almost voted for β€˜good but too high’ for the same reason. But I think psychologically it would be different to say residents get a discount than the way they’re framing it - foreigners pay more - even if the result is the same.

Also, I’m not sure if they intend to apply the policy based on residency or citizenry, although with this administration it probably is safe to assume the latter. But basing it on citizenship would probably then require everyone entering the park to present their passport as proof, which many American citizens don’t bother getting, or a birth certificate which would be ridiculous.

Phillip Seeberg's avatar

Our current president (I think more than anyone else) has politicized things so much that people can no longer judge an issue on its merits. Issues are judged on what it says about the president. I believe that his politicization of the COVID pandemic made things worse overall, regardless of whether individual policies were right or wrong.

John Houck's avatar

That’s a fair assessment.

Lynne Allen Taylor's avatar

I agree generally. However, with regard to the fee, I said no partly because this administration has done so much stuff to discourage revenue producing foreign tourism and foreign students. Standing alone, some kind of fee would not be so bad but as part of his foreigners go home policy, it just piles on.

Wendy C's avatar

I've read that losses in foreign tourism amount to $29 billion for the year 2025, and guess who is the main reason responsible for the drop? I don't see how extra fees for foreign travelers will make up the difference, let alone encourage attendance. And the reason such fees are needed is because of the massive cuts to the National Parks budget and staff.

Just curious, will foreign nationals who purchase the $1 million "Trump Gold Card" get a free pass on these fees?

Lynne Allen Taylor's avatar

The loss of tuition paying foreign students is wreaking havoc on higher education.

Laurence E Siegel's avatar

Here's my problem, Lynne. Everyone seems to know why the proposals they oppose are wrong. But what's the answer? Or is the city simply up the creek from decades of mismanagement and nothing can be done? As far as I can tell tax and fee raises on the poor are wrong. But the raising of taxes and fees on the rich is wrong. Okay, as far as I know there are three choices: raise revenue, cut costs, or a combination of both. Raising revenue seems to be out to most people. Cutting costs is always politically risky, depending on who's getting cut. I know EZ mentioned the generous health benefits for police and fire. Does that come anywhere close to solving the problem or or is it a mere symbolic move to show the city is serious?

I have another question. The city once had a population of around 3.2 million people. The last number I saw was around 2.6 million. That's a lot of people. I am not familiar with the economic numbers. But I would guess that's a loss of a lot of tax and fee income. How about more geing done to keep people and business from leaving? Brandon might have some legitimate concerns about the alternative plan put forth. But he's run into a fact of human life. Often, people don't get listened to when people don't like them. He has spent several years alienating anyone that doesn't share his agenda. Ummm, Brandon, it's not necessarily racist when someone opposes an idea of yours. You make siding with billionaires sound like a criminal act. What kind of people do you think own many of those big buildings downtown and in other places around the city along with the taxes they pay and the jobs they provide? Did you forget that Governor Pritzker, who you are constantly at war with is one of those people?

Maybe this all starts with Brandon and the City Council members sitting down and and agreeing that this is a serious crisis and they need to do better at working together. Yes, I know there is a time crunch and it's a little late to start now. But with the present impasse, there's another option? In my view, it would start with Brandon admitting that it's okay to be white and rich in Chicago and that the money is not presently there to sate his social agenda so someone is just going to need to be upset.

Lynne Allen Taylor's avatar

I'm not sure what I said to trigger this response? I agree with Mr. Seeberg that we have come to a point where we disagree with a policy like park fees for foreigners just because Trump proposed it. I don't entirely disagree with increasing fees for non-residents but with all his other non-American nonsense this seems retributive and negative in the revenue enhancing department. To paraphrase Unforgiven Brandon Johnson got nuthin' to do with it.

Laurence E Siegel's avatar

It’s not about what you said, Lynne. I apologize if you took it that way. It’s a general comment about the discussion in this forum and everything I read in the media. Even EZ was commenting on the budgets put forth by both the mayor and rebellious aldermen. Okay, so there’s problems with both. I don’t like to comment because I don’t feel I know enough about it such as why the garbage tax is unfair. Everyone knows what’s wrong with the proposals on both sides. Okay, what’s right? Or is the budget one of those intractable problems that’s been let go too long due to corruption and overspending and there is no answer? I wasn’t attacking you. I also wasn’t trying to play King Richard I, who had a habit of asking anyone that disagreed with him, β€œOkay, what’s your solution?” It just seems like there’s a lot more attacking from afar than positive suggestions.

Laurence E Siegel's avatar

I read the Las Vegas paper daily, For them tourism is in the tank thanks to tariffs and the orange stain talking about making Canada the 51st state. Vegas used to be the top Canadian destination.

Laurence E Siegel's avatar

The orange stain is hardly the first person in the White House to ignore that he's supposed to be there for all Americans whether or not they are on his side. But he has raised it to a never before seen level.

Monica Metzler's avatar

My same thought process on the vote as Chicago museums offer $1 (I think) discount for residents, which you get by showing ID w/ Chicago address. But I cannot fathom how insane the collection process is supposed to work for this! A car of 4 people and everyone is supposed to have their passport or birth certificate, and if they don't then pay the higher rate. The lines to get into parks will stretch for miles. Chaos.

Eric Zorn's avatar

II’m wondering how they going to enforce it. I saw some fine print that said that a drivers license might not be sufficient, but who carries more than that when they’re just traveling in the United States?

Phillip Seeberg's avatar

License or ID would have to be enough or it wouldn’t work.

Garry Spelled Correctly's avatar

I want to know how that will even work. How will the National Parks even know if it's a foreigner going there.

And what if they have an American friend who will buy the citizen priced entry card?

yet another stupid, unworkable "idea", from the demented, deranged, sociopathic, fat, moronic, fascist traitor!

The city is headed for a fiscal trainwreck. It has been decades in the making, and much of the credit should go to Richard M Daley, who spent quite generously with all taxpayer dollars to fund all the public unions demands to secure their support over the years. He leased two public assets: In 2004 a 99 year lease of the Skyway for 1.8 bn (which was already flipped for 2.8bn in 2016!) and in 2008 a 75 years lease of the parking meters for 1.2bn. The funds were spent in a few years to cover short term debt and are gone. Since then, the city spends money it does not have, borrowing against future citizens. It refinances debt and takes out more at cheaper rates, but the reckoning starts to come due in 2027 as appx 4bn in debt starts to come due. Refinancing will be at much higher rates, meaning more tax dollars used to cover debt and less on services. The amount spent on public workforce is unsustainable. The workers are not responsible for this mess, it is their union heads and the politicians who work hand in hand, but in the end it will be those front line workers who will suffer. IMO the only way out is via bankruptcy. That will nullify all city contracts, inlcuding union contracts, forcing serious negotiations that will be less political and more realistic in helping get this city back to financial health. Other than that...I wish you all happy holidays and a happy and healthy new year!

Garry Spelled Correctly's avatar

Unfortunately, Illinois law prohibits the city from filing bankruptcy!

"The Epstein files went from being a β€œhoax” to a β€œnational security threat” if released."

The ever increasing list of "national security risks" seems to be growing daily, including Trump's billion dollar ballroom, all offshore windmill projects, tariffs, Venezuelan fishermen, etc... it's the current blanket excuse for anything Trump wants to block from court (or Congressional) interference.

I'm waiting for the inevitable Onion list, coming soon I'm sure.
