Working papers were confiscated from an Austin resident who is an immigrant from Venezuela. She and her husband came here legally under Biden’s asylum offer. When her husband reported to his scheduled appointment, he was arrested. She can’t work without her papers. They have small children to feed. They can’t afford a private attorney and pro bonos have long waiting lists. In terms of ICE getting the eff outta town since they’ve run out of felons in Chicago, I have a suggestion for 47. Send them to Texas and Florida. They're responsible for more than 7K gun deaths each year. Abigail Jackson said “President Trump will not turn a blind eye to the lawlessness plaguing American cities and we expect to be vindicated by a higher court.” Prove it, since Greg Abbott is apparently on board: “You can either fully enforce protection for federal employees or get out of the way and let Texas Guard do it,” Abbott said in a post on X.” https://publichealth.jhu.edu/center-for-gun-violence-solutions/gun-violence-data/state-gun-violence-data
Gave you a “like” on the story, but looking at the gun death statistics TX and FL rank 24th and 28th in the US on gun deaths. About average. The 17% number is just a function of those states being approximately 17% of the US population.
Thanks for checking my math. I’d appreciate you checking it again. 7700 gun deaths in Fl and TX divided by 46000 total gun deaths per year is 16.9% If the other numbers don’t look right to you, it’s because most reports show per capita gun deaths, not total, so it’s misleading. TX and FL lead that nation with >4500 per year and >3200 per year respectively. If 47 wants to take a bite out of crime, I’d like to see him start there.
We’ll have to agree to disagree on which statistic is misleading. Your methodology would have CA (a relatively safe gun death state) “responsible” for 8.7% of gun deaths in the US each year. 2nd in the US.
Ms Leavitt (she of photoshopped husband fame) tells us the the Proposition election in CA was rigged. Hats off to Governor Newsom for bringing off a scheme to engineer a 25% victory in the largest state and marshalling the thousands of people it must have taken to pull it off. Presidential timber!
Are you shocked? It’s not about anything being rigged. California is a safely blue state and anyone with a brain knew in advance what the result would be. I said anyone with a brain knew. That doesn’t include Leavitt.
You know, the funny thing is that even the orange stain and some of his henchmen at least admitted to the results, though giving different excuses. The orange stain said it was because he wasn’t involved. Maybe Leavitt didn’t hear what her boss said.
Actually that’s a great question that I have been thinking about for some time. As much as I abhor the orange stain, I admit to him having great charisma that has enchanted his followers. Can someone else keep up the MAGA momentum? Suppose the orange stain had a major heart attack after, let’s say, a humongous Thanksgiving feast or his next Big Mac attack. Who could take over the MAGA charge? Certainly not Hillbilly JD!
Actually, I'm surprised Trump and the Republicans didn't heavily emphasize voter fraud. I'm sure they'll use that excuse in the attempt to obstruct and control voting in the 2026 elections.
I was actually surprised when Trump admitted to the election results, but blamed it on the shutdown and his not being involved. Now, because airline passengers are getting screwed, he’s hoping the public will force Democrats to reopen the government. I’m sorry many passengers might not be able to visit Mom and Dad for Thanksgiving. But they’ll be a lot sorrier when their health premiums go crashing through the sky after Republicans renege on negotiating. Let’s also remember negotiating only means talking. It doesn’t mean that MAGAs will agree to anything.
Why? Trump is still whining about the stolen election. He lied about a deal with India when their leaders claimed not knowing what he was talking about. I’m still waiting for Kennedy’s proof that Tylenol causes autism. Her lies are just another day in DC.
Even more heartening results from Tuesday are from elections that didn't get national attention but are significant in where they took place and how they directly repudiated MAGA. Popular Information published a good article on that here:
Thanks Bob & Jay -- didn't realize I could do that. Also didn't know that those 3 dot menus were called elipses just like their grammatical cousins. A good learning experience all around.
In regard to the demented, deranged, moronic, fascist traitor suing the New York Times, he won't ever sit for a deposition, because he will withdraw the fake, bullshit lawsuit before it gets to that! That's what he always does.
As for Junior Kennedy, he's utterly insane & there's not a single person on Earth, let alone anyone in medicine or education who would be crazy enough to state that heroin cure ADHD!
But you have to admit it’s a great story. It adds context to his present day behavior. I suspect he is still using since I have never heard anything about any kind of rehab. Based on his admission, is he qualified for the job? What difference does it make? Who in Trump’s Cabinet is?
My guess is that he isn’t using and probably kicked it long ago, but it doesn’t really matter. He’s a flake, but heroin doesn’t cause brain damage (that’s alcohol).
Yes, I saw the recent Frontline documentary about him on channel 11 and he talks about it. If I recall, his awakening inspired him to sally forth and do his part to make life better for humanity and the world. Personally, I would have preferred it if he had just stayed on smack.
When I lived in Chicago I had a co-worker and friend named Dustin Grove, who is also a musician (and a just a really all around cool and talented guy). I made the joke to him once that I hoped he was secretly the proprietor of the Dusty Groove record store.
I would guess that Trump destroying part of the White House to build a massive unnecessary ballroom had a lot to do with some maga voters turning against him.
Tesla cybertrucks being used by police to patrol Vegas is just weird.
Can't wait for the Vegas cops have to call for a tow when they can't get back into their Swastika truck, because the battery for the outside door handles dies & the handles won't pop out to open the doors!
It's happened a few times & at least once, the owner had to call the cops to bust the window out to rescue a child in a safety seat.
All due to the Muskrat's insistence on electronic door latches & then hiding the mechanical latch under a secret panel.
People have died in those Tesla atrocities because of this!
It looks just like what any 6th grader would draw if asked to draw a truck. All angles and slants. A neighbor has one and I swear that the 'truck' part of the title is a figment of the imagination of the Musk Melon. I watched as its owner put stuff in the space to haul away. And i realized that my purse has more useful room than that vehicle.
I find some of the post-Democratic-blowout election analysis amusing. Oh, no!! Are Dems going down the progressive road with Mamdani's win? Big mistake! and the like. Hey everyone, just look at our "Maladroit Mayor," as Eric calls him, and see his deservedly abysmal polls. Check in with Mamdani in a year, and his record of success or failure, and then start hyperventilating. And I love being a Democrat because, as the cliche goes, we're a "big tent." Progressive Mamdani won in one city (and let's see how he "governs in prose" as opposed to "campaigning in poetry") but centrists Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill won in Virginia and New Hampshire, and they're definitely centrists. Unlike the goose-step MAGA, we embrace diversity. As for the disgusting ICE/Gestapo raids, including tear gassing little children in a Halloween parade, dog-killer Kristi Noem's response to Governer Pritzker's plea to stop ICE while kids are trick or treating was a vow to increase ICE raids. Which they did, pulling people out of cars, punching them, entering property with no warrants, all masked, of course---it's goes WAY beyond "dismaying tactics." It's Nazi behavior. And finally, it says in the NY Times that the Criminal-in-Chief will "cut 10 percent of air traffic at dozens of the nation’s busiest airports if the longest government shutdown in American history continues. That could cancel thousands of flights this week." Way to go, another popular move by the demented one!
So many things to agree with! The problem the Dems have is that they don't realize that the people are moving on without them. We aren't waiting for the "leadership" to stand up to the fascists. It's the people in places like Evanston that are chasing down the fascists with whistles and signs. It's the people building networks and sharing information on how to protect our neighbors and ourselves from this. It's the people who are saying ENOUGH. I have been a Democrat my whole life and the "leaders" aren't the party. The people are, and the "leaders" have forgotten that. trump and co. are starving families for political advantage. And people are stepping up and feeding their neighbors. trump and co. are intentionally making the holiday travel season more difficult -- Thanksgiving is in three weeks. They think people will blame the dems. And maga will, but everyone else knows who's fault it is.
It is not the time to exhale or celebrate. It is the time to continue pushing back. I am concerned that people are going to think, "Yay! We won." We haven't won a damned thing yet. This fight is going to continue until trump is out of office. so only three years and three months (approximately).
I hate to rain on everyone’s parade. You all know my attitude toward the orange stain and the present administration. In my view nothing has yet been repudiated. I’m glad for the results. But blue states voted blue. It doesn’t tell us if any red state voters have changed their minds, which I doubt. I’m not excited about what happened in NYC. Mandami won’t be able to do what he promised. Free public transportation? Did anyone learn from the situation in Chicago and the suburbs? Free services? Nothing is free. Workers get paid. Supplies and equipment are purchased.
There is another point here. Trump and his minions shouldn’t be in office in the first place. Did anyone actually listen to his campaign promises? So now government workers losing their pensions and looking for new jobs are upset. Farmers getting raw dealed are upset. What did they think they were going to get? Those supporting the orange stain liked what he said because it was juvenile idiocy full of juvenile bravado that they didn’t think would hurt them. They didn’t think it would hurt them. They didn’t give a damn if it would hurt others. Now they are lapping up his lies like it was free candy and they still don’t care how if what he does negatively affects millions of people. Like I said, I’m happy about the Tuesday results. But the true test is still a year off. Think about something else. Are we actually hoping for a calamity to get MAGAs kicked out of office? The economy is headed south. Big companies are laying off thousands. The job cuts could be disastrous for services like restaurants and groceries. Healthcare rises could leave millions without proper healthcare. Note I haven’t even touched foreign affairs. I want Trump out. But I’m depressed thinking what needs to happen to people for that to happen.
This reminds me of the sigh of relief that the Democrats breathed after the “red wave” that was feared did not materialize in 2022. We know how that complacency informed their handling of the presidential election two years later, and what the consequence of it was. I fear that they will repeat this pattern.
Thank you! I said this before Trump’s first election. No one could believe that a clown of a failed reality show with a checkered business past could even be nominated, much less elected. I said at the time that people were tired of choosing between 2 evils and looking for change from professional politicians even if it meant a clown like Trump. We know how that came out. Both sides now know more clearly than ever what Trump is. To me, Tuesday means little outside of where the elections took place. This is one time I am actually going to blast the mainstream media. They are drunk giddy with glee over Democratic success. I have seen tons of stories about the tide turning against Trumpism. I’m not buying it, not yet. The tide hasn’t been turned in red states. Media idiocy will simply piss off MAGAs and guarantee political activism on their part.
Furthermore, I still don’t see clear cut leadership on the Democratic side. What do Democrats want as opposed to the fascism offered by Republicans? Even many Democrats realize that socialism is not affordable and doesn’t work. Where is the new wave of leaders I keep hearing about? Even if Trump fades away, many conservatives like what is happening and will support their candidates and causes. Who will liberals coalesce behind? I assume nothing right now about either 2026 or 2028.
There is something else I need add no matter how crass it may sound or unpopular. The liberal movement to be more inclusive is courageous and admirable. It is long past time for crabby old white men to run the country. Chicago has a black mayor. Illinois has a senator that is a female war veteran. We are seeing Latinos, Asians, and genders other than simply straight men and women. It is more representative of the population which to me is what this country should have been since the start. Unfortunately many conservatives aren’t buying it. Idiots like Marjorie Greene think Christian nationalists should run the country with other religions as second class citizens. Many whites fear demographic reports that have whites as a minority by 2050. We are all aware of the fearmongers that have existed since the country first started. It’s a giant factor politically. Conservatives might decide to group behind white Christian conservatives no matter what kind of clowns or idiots run. Need I remind everyone that’s how we ended up with Trump?
What astounds me about the Orange Menace is that I do not remember ANY journalist asking HOW he was going to do all the things he bragged about. In 2015 or 2024 or in 2025 or at anytime in his wretched life? Did anyone say "So, just how are you going to bring inflation down?"
The good news wasn't just that blue places voted blue but the *size* of those wins. Democrats beat expectations in Virginia and especially New Jersey by a lot -- close ones became blowouts, even the scandal-plagued Jones was dragged across the finish line, Virginia may have enough statehouse legislators to counter Republican gerrymandering, and the gerrymandering vote in California was such a blowout win that it breathed life into the idea of more blue states doing likewise.
See also this post from Nate Silver, where he quotes one analyst's pre-election benchmarks, which came in at the very top end -- a "fantastic night" -- for Democrats.
I'm not excited about Mamdani either -- it's not just that I think he overpromised; I'm not wild about what he promised in the first place -- which is why I was happy to see his win balanced in the moment by surprisingly convincing wins by more conventional sorts. It's a stark reminder that while Mamdani can win in New York City -- and, really, just barely there with just above 50% (remember, his opposition was split) -- Democrats can win and, probably, can only win in most races with people more like Sherrill.
Agreed. I'll write what I came to say as a response to you instead of a free-standing comment.
I am not exhaling. They, still, hold the levers of power with the intent to rig next year's elections to, as somebody elegantly put it, win more seats without winning more votes.
I am, still, waiting for them to play their, excuse the expression, trump card, which is operationalizing the fact that court orders don't mean diddly if the Department of Justice orders the subordinate U.S. Marshall service to not enforce them.
We have repeatedly underestimated the Trump cancer's ability to recur and metastasize. The key people in The Regime have the power that they have dreamed of having for much of their lives. They will not quit. Neither should we.
I won't be exhaling until the Democrats control a house of Congress after the next election. If, in such an electorally hostile environment, the Republicans are able to hold the Congress next year, the American Experiment will be toast and The Great Faker will be President for Life.
The quip about being out of Magenta hit home. A few weeks ago that happened to me so I ordered a knock off replacement cartridge. I've done it before and while my HP printer scolds me, it usually accepts the new cartridge.
Not this time. And when i put the old one back in, it also complained that the cartridge was empty.
I did all the troubleshooting suggestions the interwebs provide but alas I had to buy another knockoff cartridge. and that one worked.
Two knockoff cartridges were still cheaper than a bone fide HP one.
Ditch your HP and Buy an Epson Tank Printer! Epson's ink is SO MUCH cheaper than HP's, and I buy the even cheaper knock-off Epson Ink refills which work fine. HP's ink is costs almost as much as the herb saffron . . . .
Even better, get a color laser. Toner cartridges last a long time, no nozzles getting clogged. It's a bigger investment upfront but the quality is unbeatable.
This was posted on social media following Tuesday's election results: "Voters held Trump and the Republicans accountable last night, but now they are pretending voters did no such thing.
And as they have since Trump came on the scene, reporters are going to play along."
This is what we're up against, both the Republicans and the news media, going forward.
“Domestic Violence Advocate” is redolent of “Sexual Harassment Training.” As one of the characters on The Good Place said, I don’t need Sexual Harassment Training, I’m already good at it.
One of the most disturbing things about the arrest at the day care center is that, according to Delia Ramirez, surveillance footage shows armed, masked men going into four classrooms. I mean, WTF?
Also, I am a hair's breadth from cancelling my print subscription to the Trib and going digital only, and then increasing the number of days I get the NYT.
Let me point out something else. She had legal work authorization. Just for argument sakes, let’s say we accept any smidgen of the government version. Why were they after her car in the first place? Was she a known dangerous felon? They couldn’t have simply waited until she got to where she was going and then asked for papers? They chased her into a day care. Common sense, obviously lacking in the agents, tells me it was going to be full of small tots. They needed to bust in there and scare the kids to death? Why? Did they think she was a dangerous felon that would hold the kids hostage or something? As I said, even if one believes any part of the story from the feds, the entire incident was extremely questionable. All they are going to do is piss off people in Chicago against law enforcement and the federal government. Welcome to the Trump uniting the nation tour.
Eric writes "Galeano reportedly has a work authorization permit based on her pending asylum case. Whether or not that is or should be sufficient to allow her to stay in the country is debatable." My question is, just how is it "debatable" is she has a permit? A work authorization permit is sufficient to allow her to stay in the country, so if she has one, Galeano is legally authorized to work in the US.
I confess to not knowing enough about the fine points of immigration law to know whether the DHS claim that she is deportable under the circumstances is accurate, that's all I was trying to say. It would seem to me that if she has filed for asylum and has an asylum case pending that would be enough. I believe the asylum claim itself comes with work authorization, but I am willing to be corrected.
Please. “What is Sunscreen?” Is the correct *question*, not the correct answer. As the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy points out, knowing the question is often more important than knowing the answer.
That’s the answer. The ultimate answer to the question of life, the universe, and everything. It’s subtle. In binary it’s 101010. Is also 6x7. But what is the question *really*?
"The answer is a quiz show gimmick whereby the host presents 'answers' and asks contestants for the correct 'question,' in an ostensibly clever reversal of the typical quiz show format, except where the 'answers' are always absurdly specific in relation to the 'questions,' such that there is no genuine reversal of answer and question except grammatically."

Don - just a heads-up, for future reference. you can correct an error in a post to the PS by [my method] -
* copy the post in error
* paste it to a blank doc in Word [or other word processing app]
* delete the post with the error [click on the ellipsis - ... - at the right-side margin, across from your name]
* correct the post in Word
* copy the corrected post

Why don't you simply "Edit" the post (which is a choice in the ellipsis)?
Thanks Bob & Jay -- didn't realize I could do that. Also didn't know that those 3 dot menus were called elipses just like their grammatical cousins. A good learning experience all around.

He did go to rehab, decades ago, and was in a 12-step program where he experienced a "spiritual awakening."
Yes, I saw the recent Frontline documentary about him on channel 11 and he talks about it. If I recall, his awakening inspired him to sally forth and do his part to make life better for humanity and the world. Personally, I would have preferred it if he had just stayed on smack.
He didn’t say it was a cure for ADHD. Read it again.
With the overwhelming repudiation of Trump and MAGA this past week, expect even more desperate moves from the Gross Oligarch Party over the next year.
When I lived in Chicago I had a co-worker and friend named Dustin Grove, who is also a musician (and a just a really all around cool and talented guy). I made the joke to him once that I hoped he was secretly the proprietor of the Dusty Groove record store.

Tesla cybertrucks being used by police to patrol Vegas is just weird.
Ain’t nobody else buying those cartoon trucks.
There are THREE in my neighborhood. Stupidest looking thing ever. I'd rather have a Volkswagen Thing.
I laugh and point at the drivers like they're idiots whenever I see one of those Swastikars...
Can't wait for the Vegas cops have to call for a tow when they can't get back into their Swastika truck, because the battery for the outside door handles dies & the handles won't pop out to open the doors!

Simple solution: Patrolling with driverless cybertrucks.
And focus them on picking up undocumented lawn-mowing Roombas and other droids.
It looks just like what any 6th grader would draw if asked to draw a truck. All angles and slants. You're not raining on my parade. I agree with most of what you said. :)
I also want to say, the trump administration and ICE officials are defying federal court orders. That's not boding well for the long term.
I loved the judge calling out Bovino's blatant lies.
Farmers are idiots! They consistently vote for Re Thug Licons who then turn around & screw them six ways to Sundays, then vote for them again & again.
They never learn, I guess being out in the fields all day fries their brains!
I think you should be in charge of DNC social media and bumper stickers.

What brand of color laser printer do you have? I have a black and white laser printer.
Serious question - what do folks print out anymore? I have one, but only really print something out when I have to for my (93-year old) father.
Good question. I've always tried to avoid printing stuff out but sometimes you just gotta. For instance:
My kids' teachers will text us a copy of the study words for a test and it's easier to have a print out;
I had to print a FedEx label this week;
I'll print a recipe and highlight the ingredients we need for my wife's weekly shopping trip.
those are but a few i can think of off the top of me head.
What a wonderful show "The Good Place" was/is.
I’m just now finishing the last season on Prime. I think it’s sensational. My wife thinks it’s stupid. I guess opposites attract.
With this misadministration it's easy money to bet they won't consider it sufficient, whether it historically has been or not.

"What is bullshit?"
